Description
The 2008 Volkswagen GLI is a brand new model name, but the same compact economy car was known last year as the Jetta GLI. Aside from the abbreviated model name, the GLI also drops both the automatic climate control and Fahrenheit options package from its list of available upgrades. A newly available options package, the Autobahn, adds several of the most wanted luxury upgrade features. The GLI's rather non-descript yet attractive exterior styling doesn't even hint at the powerful turbo engine under the hood or its superb handling capabilities, but this economical and nimble little car seems to built for driving enthusiasts on a budget. While the GLI lacks the exterior flash that is typically associated with sporty compact cars, it outperforms the majority in its class. The front wheel drive GLI sedan is available with your choice of either a 6 speed manual transmission or Volkswagen's Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) which enables quick changes between rapid manual shifting and automatic mode. The GLI's only engine choice is a lively turbocharged 2.0 liter inline 4 cylinder that cranks out 200 horsepower. Fuel efficiency is better than one might expect for a car that goes from 0 to 60 in an impressive 8 seconds with EPA ratings for the GLI outfitted with the DSG transmission at 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The lone trim GLI has a very impressive standard features list that includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, bi-xenon headlights, eye appealing metallic interior trim, air-conditioning, bolstered front seats, full power accessories, cruise control, heated outside mirrors, a 60-40-split-folding rear seat and a 10-speaker stereo system featuring satellite radio, a CD changer and an auxiliary jack. The Autobahn Option Package adds heated leather seats with power lumbar support, an upgraded stereo system and a sunroof. Other options include a navigation system, a sunroof and a nice assortment of rear spoilers and wheels. The 2008 Volkswagen GLI accommodates 4 adults comfortably and has 16 cubic feet of storage space available in the trunk. The European style interior boasts superior quality materials, fit and finish throughout the cabin. For those looking for a compact car that is every bit as exciting to drive as it is safe, reliable and visually appealing in an economy car price range, the GLI should be on the list of test drives.
